Mitsubishi Colt (04 - 13)

The Colt is synonymous with Mitsubishi and testament to the car’s ability to last; you can still many old versions on the road. Competing with the likes of the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo, and the Toyota Yaris, the Colt is just that bit different. The thing about it is that its second-hand price makes it a real prospect. The cabin is simple and straightforward and there’s a decent boot. It’s comfortable, quiet, and has plenty of standard equipment. On the road, it behaves exactly as you would expect a supermini; it’s nippy about town, handles well, has sharp and responsive steering and the ride quality is comfortable and copes well on uneven surfaces. Visibility is good so you feel confident and in control. In 2008 the European Colt (built in the Netherlands) underwent a facelift, while the Japanese Colt followed suit in 2009. The general shape remained the same, with a few tweaks here and there to sharpen up the image. Mitsubishi also gave the Colt a new and cooler looking front grille, with sharper front and rear lights and an even neater looking tailgate.

Look out for

•  Be sure to stick to the maintenance schedule as much as possible in order to avoid future issues

What we like

•  It is an enjoyable and easy car to drive, especially around town

•  Generous level of standard kit included even with the entry level model

•  It is reliable, practical and safe

•  It doesn’t cost a fortune to keep on the road

What we don't like

•  It can get quite noisy in the cabin when driving at high speed
