Honda Civic (12 - present)

The Civic has been around for quite some time and has a reputation as a reliable, stylish, yet very affordable car. Honda tried to keep these principles there when the latest Civic was produced. And for the most part, they did just that. It’s reliable, it’s affordable and looks good on the inside and out (although the exterior may not be to everyone’s taste). The inside is nicely designed and Honda decided to make the central console more user friendly as opposed to the last model. There’s plenty of standard kit and safety features on board, as well as a refined, spacious, versatile cabin, and a class-leading roomy boot. To drive, it is every bit as good, if not better, than its popular predecessor. The ride quality is really comfortable, there’s minimal road noise, and the handling is really sharp. There are four really good engines to choose from; 1.4-litre and 1.8-litre petrols and 2.2-litre and 1.6-litre diesels, pushing out 99bhp, 140bhp, 148bhp and 118bhp respectively.

Look out for

•  The nut that holds the wiper onto the spindle can sometimes come loose but it is an easy fix

What we like

•  Very spacious interior and boot

•  Rear seats can fold completely flat to add to the already huge boot

•  There are two frugal, economic and capable engines to choose from

•  The ride quality is very comfortable

•  Doesn’t cost a fortune to run

•  There’s lots of standard kit and safety features

What we don't like

•  Visibility through the rear window is very poor

•  Headroom in the rear of the car is not great
